The community autism project is something very close to my heart as my son was diagnosed with autism just after his third birthday in 2012.

I found the whole process of learning about the condition and how it my impact on my son’s life to be quite a stressful and often lonely journey, as I had many questions and didn’t know who to talk to about them.

So in 2013 I helped to set up a support group for parents and guardians of ASC children (before, during and after diagnosis) to meet people going through similar experiences, to talk to each other and share ideas. Since then we have linked in with over 60 families who live within Market Weighton and around the East Riding of Yorkshire.

We now run several support groups a month, details of which can be found on the support group page and have a ‘secret’ facebook page for our ‘signed up’ members so they can talk to each other at any time and with confidentially.

These support groups have also helped me. Not just when the going gets tough but also to laugh about life and celebrate my son’s achievements.

Over the years I have wondered about how to support families more and to raise awareness and understanding of autism in our local area.

In April 2019 after a good few months of hard work from the CAP trustees we gained our charity number, this was a very proud moment for us and me as the president and more importantly as an ASC Mummy.
